Getting married in Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) offers a blend of romance and adventure set against the backdrop of America’s captivating western wilderness. Located just outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, GTNP is not only a gateway to breathtaking natural beauty but also a journey into the heart of the wild, American West.
From the moment you fly into Jackson Hole Airport, you’ll forget the outside world exists, darlin’!
Best Time of Year For A Grand Teton Wedding
GTNP is a year-round paradise, each season offering its unique charm and no shortage of activities to partake in! In the summer, the park comes alive with hiking, fishing, rafting, mountain climbing, horseback riding, and wildlife tours. Not far off, the wonders of Yellowstone beckon. Come winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland! Ideal for world-class skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, dog sledding, and relaxing in natural hot springs.
Without further ado, let’s break down the type of weather you can expect for each season:
Summer (Mid-June through Mid-September):
The park absolutely vibrates with life during summer! It’s a prime time for couples who love the outdoors and want their wedding backdrop filled with lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers. Activities for guests include hiking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, and scenic raft trips on the Snake River. Wildlife tours are also popular, offering glimpses of the park’s diverse fauna in full activity.
Fall (Mid-September through November):
Fall in Grand Teton is a spectacle of color with fiery aspens and crisp air. It’s less crowded, allowing for more intimate, immersive celebrations. The weather is cool, and snow has hit the Teton Peaks. Perfect for couples who enjoy the dramatic contrast of early snow on the mountains with golden grasses across the prairie. Fair warning, the elk rut during this season will add a unique natural soundtrack to your vows! It’s truly a magical experience to listen as they bugle among the valley. This is also the ideal time for stunning photos with a natural golden-hour filter extending throughout the day. You just want to keep in mind some of the closures with off-season during November that might make it a bit more challenging!
Winter (December through April):
A winter elopement is for the adventurous couple with a side of cozy crackling fires. With Grand Teton National Park set against a pristine snowy backdrop and crystal-clear skies. You’ll find yourself immersed in winter sports like skiing and snowboarding at nearby resorts, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and cozy sleigh rides. Ceremonies are breathtakingly beautiful, from big, fluffy snowflakes to the stark beauty of snow-covered mountains above frosty meadows! We recommend Jan-March for the best snow opportunities for winter weddings but December can be lovely too! April you’ll find the ski season ending and then lots of places closed for the off-season.
Spring (May):
“Spring” (in this instance, I’m referring to the month of May and the month of May only!) is brief but magical, as the park shakes off winter’s snow revealing blooming wildflowers and budding trees. The meltwater swells rivers and streams, making the landscape lush and vibrant. Often we find this time of year not ideal for weddings. As many places around town close down for the off-season in April, they don’t reopen till mid-May. So we only recommend late May weddings! Which is a quiet time around Jackson Hole and the parks as tourists haven’t quite yet arrived and the park is just beginning to burst with life.
Understanding Permits for Getting Married in Grand Teton National Park
Getting married in the majestic Grand Teton National Park requires a bit of preparation, particularly when it comes to understanding and obtaining the necessary permits. Ensuring you have the proper permits will help your day go smoothly, while also respecting the park’s regulations and contributing to the preservation of this natural wonder. Which is something we’re hopefully all striving to do!
Special Use Permits: A Must-Have for Weddings and Elopements
All weddings and elopements in Grand Teton National Park require a Special Use Permit. This permit is designed to minimize impacts on the park’s resources and visitor experiences. Here’s what you need to know about securing your permit:
- Application Process: Couples must apply for a Special Use Permit by submitting a completed application form to the park’s administration. The form is available on the National Park Service (NPS) website.
- Application Fee: There is a non-refundable application fee that must be paid when you submit your application. This fee covers the cost of processing the permit and is required whether or not the permit is ultimately granted.
- Timing: It’s recommended to apply for the permit well in advance of your planned wedding date. You HAVE to submit applications at least 30 days in advance; however, considering the popularity of the location, the earlier you apply, the better! They always update regulations and when permits launch so keep an eye on the site for details.
- Approval Process: Once submitted, the permit application will be reviewed by park officials. Approval is based on the specifics of your event and its potential impact on the park environment and other visitors. Be prepared to adjust your plans as the park might suggest changes to minimize environmental impacts or conflicts with other park activities.
- Site-Specific Restrictions: Certain areas within the park are more sensitive and may have stricter regulations or may not allow weddings at all. Be sure to check the specific area you are interested in for any additional restrictions or guidelines.
Additional Considerations:
- Group Size: The park has specific limitations on the number of attendees based on the location chosen for the ceremony. Smaller, more secluded spots may have stricter limits to preserve their tranquility and environmental integrity.
- Equipment and Setup: Restrictions apply to the type of equipment you can bring and set up for your ceremony. Structures such as chairs, arches, and extensive decorations may be restricted or require additional approval, depending on their potential impact on the landscape.
- Leave No Trace: Following Leave No Trace principles is crucial while in the park (and in any other outdoor space, for that matter). Decorations should be minimal and must be completely removed after the ceremony. The use of confetti, rice, or other similar materials is not permitted.
- Photography: While photography is encouraged, drone usage is prohibited within national parks. Make sure your videographer (if you have one) is aware of this and other guidelines to prevent any disruptions during your ceremony.
- Accessibility: Consider the accessibility of your chosen location, especially if you have guests with mobility challenges. Some areas might be more accessible than others, and it’s important to plan accordingly to ensure that all guests can comfortably attend and enjoy the ceremony.

Securing Your Wyoming Marriage License
Before you saddle up for your big day in the striking landscapes of Grand Teton National Park, there’s an essential item you’ll need to check off your list: obtaining a Wyoming marriage license. Here’s a straightforward guide to ensure that your union is officially recognized, letting you focus on the more exciting aspects of your wedding plans!
Eligibility and Requirements:
No Residency Needed: Good news – you don’t have to be a Wyoming resident to marry in the state! This makes it an ideal spot for both locals and those planning a destination wedding.
Application Process: At least one member of the couple must apply in person at a county clerk’s office. If both can attend, that’s even better, but if one can’t make it, make sure to bring a witness.
Identification: Bring a valid photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport when you apply.
Fee: The application fee for a marriage license in Wyoming is $30.
Timing and Validity:
Quick Issuance: In most cases, you’ll receive your marriage license within minutes of applying, thanks to Wyoming’s efficient processing.
Long Validity: The license is valid for one year, giving you plenty of time to plan your ceremony without stress.
Post-Wedding Requirements: After your wedding, you have up to 10 days to return the completed license to the county clerk’s office to ensure your marriage is legally recorded.
A Few Extra Tips:
Timing Your Application: Even though obtaining your license is a quick process, it would be smart to handle this at least a few days before your ceremony. This buffer allows you to address any unforeseen issues and relax knowing all legalities are sorted!
Plan Ahead: Especially during peak wedding seasons or around holidays, give yourself extra time to obtain your license in case of increased demand at the clerk’s office.
